| dc.description.abstract | The field of science education is changing, focusing greater importance on developing students’ critical thinking and analytical skills beyond mere rote memorization. Among these essential skills, spatial thinking is gaining recognition as a fundamental component of scientific literacy. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer a powerful avenue to cultivate spatial acumen across science curricula, particularly in exploring celestial phenomena. This paper examines the integration of GIS in science education, with particular focus on extra-Earth explorations. Through a comprehensive analysis of GIS applications in astronomy and planetary science education, we illuminate the pedagogical opportunities, implementation challenges, and promising practices across educational settings. The integration of GIS into science curriculum supports interdisciplinary learning, fosters spatial thinking skills crucial for STEM careers, and provides authentic contexts for problem-based learning. This review provides example activities and lesson ideas for incorporating GIS-based instruction into science education. | uk_UA |
